چکیده

Three experiments investigated serial position effects in immediate and final free recall. Each word in a 10-item list was both preceded and followed by a 15-sec period of distraction activity. In Experiment 1, half of the lists were immediately followed by either a recall test or a recognition test; the remaining lists were not tested, but were followed by a different distraction activity. After presentation of all lists, a final recall or recognition test was given. Primacy was observed only in immediate free recall and in all final tests following immediate free recall, demonstrating that primacy develops from a free-recall storage strategy. No recency was observed in Experiment 1. In Experiment 2, every list was followed by an immediate free-recall test, with a final free-recall test after the last list. The primacy results of Experiment 1 were replicated. Furthermore, the appearance of recency in Expriment 2 suggests that recency results from a retrieval strategy that failed to develop in Experiment 1 because some lists were not tested immediately. To eliminate an artifact account, Experiment 3 used an experimenter-paced distractor task and replicated the findings of Experiment 2, which used a subject-paced distractar task. Contrary to previous claims, the pattern of results in the continuous distractor paradigm is seen as completely consistent with the account offered by multistore models of serial position effects in standard free recall.

Primacy versus recency in a quantitative model: activity is the critical distinction.

Behavioral and neurobiological evidence shows that primacy and recency are subserved by memory systems for intermediate- and short-term memory, respectively. A widely accepted explanation of recency is that in short-term memory, new learning overwrites old learning. Primacy is not as well understood, but many hypotheses contend that initial items are better encoded into long-term memory because...

The concept of a limited-capacity short-term memory

(STM) buffer has played a central role in theories of memory. Indeed, such a buffer is an essential component of computational models that account for quantitative data in tasks of immediate and delayed free recall, including the search of associative memory model (SAM; Raaijmakers & Shiffrin, 1981; see also Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968; Kahana, 1996; Waugh & Norman, 1965) and the adaptive control...

Contextual variability and serial position effects in free recall.

In immediate free recall, words recalled successively tend to come from nearby serial positions. M. J. Kahana (1996) documented this effect and showed that this tendency, which the authors refer to as the lag recency effect, is well described by a variant of the search of associative memory (SAM) model (J. G. W. Raaijmakers & R. M. Shiffrin, 1980, 1981). In 2 experiments, participants performed...

Primacy, Recency, and the von Restorff Effect in Rats' Nonspatial Recognition Memory

In 2 experiments, nonspatial memory was investigated. Hungry rats obtained food in a Y maze with a continuous nonmatching-to-sample procedure, which used objects placed in goalboxes as stimuli. Rats visited 5 goalboxes, each containing 1 object. After a retention interval, the rats were presented with a choice between a goalbox identical to one in the series and a novel goalbox. Of l I subjects...

Primacy and recency effects as indices of the focus of attention

Ongoing debate surrounds the capacity and characteristics of the focus of attention. The present study investigates whether a pattern of larger recency effects and smaller primacy effects reported in previous working memory studies is specific to task conditions used in those studies, or generalizes across manipulations of task-demand. Two experiments varied task-demands by requiring participan...
